The Songkran festival is expected to generate 52.50 billion baht during the 21 days, drawing 15.03 million domestic trips. Northeast has the highest number of tourists with 3.37 million trips

Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol said the Maha Songkran World Water Festival between April 1-21, is expected to generate 52.50 billion baht revenue based on 15.03 million domestic trips.

Northeast has the highest number of tourists with 3.37 million trips; followed by 3.43 million trips of the central and western; 2.78 million trips of eastern; 2.29 million of northern; 1.39  million trips of southern; and 1.38 million in Bangkok.

Eastern is projected to generate the highest revenue of 10.60 billion baht; followed by 9.90 billion baht of Bangkok; 9.70 billion baht of the northern; 7.71 billion baht of southern; 7.52 billion baht of southern; and seven billion baht of the central and the western.

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reported as of March 28, an occupancy rate in nationwide is projected at 78% which equal to Bangkok, the eastern and southern; 77% in the central and  eastern; 75% in northeast; 74% in Bangkok; 73% in northern  

She said the government launching Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024 is a special occasion to celebrate that the festival has been formally recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage event by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

The government allocated 130 million  baht for three ministries to jointly promote the state celebration, comprising the Tourism and Sports, Culture and Interior ministries, which will host Songkran celebrations in all provinces.

The Maha Songkran World Water Festival will feature 20 special parades, depicting Thai culture from across all regions, as well as parades showcasing

With celebrations spread across 21 days, the Songkran festival will start in Chiang Mai from April 1-15, before wrapping up with the “Wan Lai” festival in Chon Buri from April 19-21, which is known for a later water festival than other provinces.

Bangkok is hosting the festival at Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue, Sanam Luang during April 11-15 while TAT also introduces 72 tourism routes nationwide for tourists to pay homage to sacred objects.

The festival also would promote local Songkran traditions and activities. Related organizations would be the responsibility of cultural networks in the 76 provinces.
